If you've been putting off setting up ID Austria because your old FinanzOnline login still works fine, there's now a deadline that makes procrastinating a bit riskier.
What's Changing
Austria's Finance Ministry is shifting FinanzOnline registration and access recovery onto ID Austria, the country's digital identity system. The specific change: the old method of recovering your FinanzOnline access code via email or mobile phone will be discontinued after October 2026.
This doesn't mean your current FinanzOnline account stops working overnight. It means that if you ever lose your access code or need to recover your account after that date, the old recovery path won't be there — you'll need ID Austria to get back in.
Why This Matters for Tax Season
FinanzOnline is where most Austrian employees file their annual tax return (Arbeitnehmerveranlagung). If you only log in once a year around tax season and tend to forget your access code in between, you're exactly the kind of user this change affects most. Getting locked out during filing season with no working recovery method is a genuinely inconvenient way to discover this change happened.
How to Set Up ID Austria Before the Deadline
- Download the Digitales Amt app on your smartphone (available for iOS and Android).
- Register using your ID card, passport, or an existing "Handy-Signatur" if you have one — the older mobile-signature system is being phased out in favor of ID Austria.
- Complete identity verification either fully online (with a supported ID document and NFC-capable phone) or at a registration desk, such as your local Meldeamt or certain Austrian Post branches.
- Link ID Austria to FinanzOnline the next time you log in — FinanzOnline will offer this as a login option once your ID Austria is active.
The whole process typically takes well under 15 minutes if you do it online with a supported ID document.
What If You Never Log In to FinanzOnline?
If you file your tax return through a Steuerberater (tax advisor) rather than doing it yourself online, this change may not affect you directly — but it's still worth setting up ID Austria at some point, since it's increasingly the standard way to interact with Austrian government services generally, not just tax filing.
Bottom Line
There's no need to panic before October 2026, but there's also no good reason to wait until the last minute. Setting up ID Austria now means one less thing to worry about when it's time to file your next Arbeitnehmerveranlagung.
